It is a T-shaped copper bearing intrauterine device inserted only by trained healthcare professional into a woman’s uterus. It is a small, flexible, T- shaped device with a copper or wire around it. It works essentially by prompting chemical effect that destroys the sperm and the egg cells before they meet, thus preventing pregnancy very effectively. It is also believed that it causes changes in the lining of the uterus that will reduce the probability of implantation.
Possible Side Effects:
Some patients reportedly experience changes in bleeding patterns such as, irregular bleeding, prolonged monthly bleeding, and more cramps and pain during menstrual period that usually occurs in the first 3 to 6 months following the insertion.
Uncommon health risk like anemia may happen especially to those women with low iron blood store because Copper T IUD causes heavier monthly bleeding.
Report any STD before having Copper T IUD insertion for it can rarely cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
Precautions and Contraindications:
Patients with anemia should take extra caution when deciding to have copper T insertion. Copper T will not protect you from HIV or any Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Miscarriage or even pre term birth may happen to patients who become pregnant with the IUD in place. Copper TCu 380A IUD should not be used to patient with uterus less than 6.5 cm in depth errors like this can cause serious effect to patient, which includes product breakage, pelvic infection, uterine or cervical perforation.
Any serious effect should be given immediate attention and should be reported to your Doctor.
