Description:
Hyalgan is a
sterile mixture made up of natural sodium hyaluronate. Hyaluronate is a natural
chemical found in the body and is found in high amounts in the joint tissues
and fluid that fills the joints. This works as a shock absorber and is needed
for the joint to work properly. With Osteoarthritis (OA) there may not be
enough of the hyaluronate in the joints. Hyalgan is used to relieve the pain
due to OA. This product is used when the body doesn't respond to other
painkillers or exercise.
Indications/Usage:
Hyalgan
is only for injection in the knee and should be administered by your doctor.
One injection comes as a 2ml syringe with 20mg of hyaluronate sodium. Your
doctor will give the injection into the affected knee. The treatment cycle
consists of three to five injections given in weekly intervals.
Side
Effects:
The
most common side effects include: diarrhea, headaches, itching of the skin,
loss of appetite, nausea and/or vomiting, stomach pain, and swelling of the
knee. These side effects do not need any medical attention and may go away once
your body adjusts to the medication. You should check with your doctor if the
effects become persistent and bothersome.
Precautions:
You
should not use this product if you have had any previous allergic reactions to
Hyalgan or other similarly composed medications. You should not have the
product injected into the knee if there is an infection or any form of a skin
disease in the area. Before using this medication tell your doctor about any
reactions to foods, preservatives, and/or dyes.
