Description:
It is a contraceptive, single rod implant inserted just under the skin of a woman’s upper arm that is known to be effective for up to three years. There are several ways on how Implanon prevents pregnancy. First, it prevents the release of egg from your ovary second, it keeps sperm from reaching the egg that is caused by thickening of the cervix mucus and third, it changes the lining of the uterus. However, Implanon should be removed by the end of the third year and can be replaced by a new one if desired to continue with the birth control process. Once it has been removed your ability to get pregnant will usually returns quickly.
Side Effects:
A change in the menstrual cycle is one of the common side effects, you should expect by having implanon. Your menstrual periods will be irregular and volatile throughout the time you have Implanon inserted. Some common side effects like headache, acne, mood swings, weight gain, breast tenderness, dizziness, nervousness, pain at site of insertion are being reported by women using Implanon.
There are also problems that are related with the insertion and removal process of Implanon such as, pain, swelling, bruising at the site of implant, infection, scarring or even keloid formation, very rarely is expulsion of the device.
Precautions and Contraindications:
The possibility of having an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy occurring outside the uterus) if you become pregnant while on Implanon is high. Ectopic pregnancy is dangerous and could cause serious internal bleeding or even death. Certain medications could also affect the efficacy of Implanon use of non hormonal contraceptive may be needed for back up.
Any abnormal or uncommon side effects should be reported to your healthcare practitioner and should be given high importance. Report any medications that you are taking or intend to take such medications may influence the Implanon’s Efficacy. It is better to consult your Doctor if Implanon is best for you.
