Mirena
(52 mg Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Description:

Mirena is a soft, flexible T shaped contraceptive Intrauterine Device (IUD) that contains progestin hormone called levonorgestrel that is often used in birth control pills. It does not contain any estrogen, so you don’t have to worry about estrogen-related side effects. The release of levonorgestrel into the uterus may thicken your cervical mucus that will inhibit sperm movement and reduce sperm survival. Less menstrual bleeding over time caused by thinning of the lining of the uterus may also be experienced by patients having Mirena. Mirena prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years.

Only a Professional Healthcare Practitioner can insert Mirena to a patient. It can be done once every 5 years and can be removed anytime if desired to discontinue birth control process. Mirena is recommended to women who have had at least one child and Mirena will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

Common Side Effects:

Most common side effects of Mirena is pain, bleeding, or dizziness during and after insertion. These symptoms should stop 30 minutes after the procedure. The doctor will examine you if symptoms persist, Mirena may not have been correctly placed. Mirena may also come out of itself. This is called expulsion. You must have a back up birth control method if you think Mirena has come out. You may become pregnant if this happens.

Since Mirena contains a small amount of hormone, some hormone-related side effects may be experience by patients such as headaches, nausea, abdominal cramps, acne, breast tenderness, weight gain, water retention. These side effects usually diminish after 2 months of Mirena use.
