Description
Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) belongs to the type of medicines called bisphosphonates. Bisphophonates are often used to treat patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM), bone metastases from solid tumor, Osteoperosis, & Paget's disease.
Indication
Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) is indicated for treatment of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, for treatment to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, treatment of Paget's disease in both men and women, and for treatment and prevention of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Dosage and Administration
Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) is supplied in a 5mg/100 ml solution (ready-to infuse) vial.
A 5mg infusion given intravenously once a year for not less than 15 minutes; for the treatment of patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis, treatment for men with increase bone mass with osteoporosis, and for the treatment and prevention of patients with glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis. Patients should be hydrated appropriately prior to treatment of this medication. It is also required for patients to be adequately supplemented with calcium and vitamin D if dietary intake is not sufficient. An average of 1200 mg of calcium and 800-1000 IU of vitamin D daily is recommended for patients with osteoporosis especially to postmenopausal women.
Containdications
Contraindicated to patients with hypersensitivity to Zoledronic Acid or to any component found in Reclast (Zoledronic acid). Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) and Zometa contains the same active ingredients, so if you are already receiving treatment for Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) you should not be treated with Zometa. Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) is also contraindicated to patients suffering from hypocalcemia.
Warning and Precautions
- Product containing the same active ingredient should not be taken at the same time. Thus, Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) and Zometa should not be taken at the same time.
- Patients with hypocalcemia and mineral metabolism must be effectively treated first before initiating treatment for Reclast (Zoledronic Acid). Clinical monitoring of calcium and mineral level is highly recommended for these patients.
- Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) should not be used to patients with severe renal impairment.
- ONJ (Osteonecrosis of the jaw) has also been reported in patients treated with bisphosphonates including zoledronic acid.
- You should not use Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) if you are pregnant and planning to become pregnant.
