Description:
Synvisc is a safe and effective therapy for local treatment of Osteoporosis.
The name of the substance in Synvisc, Hyaluronan, is secreted by cells in the
cartilage of joints. Hyaluronan is one of the major components of joint fluid,
and it gives the joint fluid, also called synovial fluid, its viscous, slippery
quality. The high viscosity of synovial fluid allows for the cartilage surfaces
of joints to glide upon each other in a smooth fashion.
Indications/Usage:
Synvisc is used to relieve pain in the knee due to OA (osteoarthritis). This
product is used when other forms of pain relievers do not provide enough
relief. This medication is only for injection into the knee, and should only be
performed by a doctor. The doctor will inject 2ml into the knee once a week,
for a total of 3 weeks. Results don't always appear within the first week of
treatment, it can take from 8 to 12 weeks after the start of treatment.
Side
Effects:
The side effects most commonly seen are pain, swelling and/or fluid build-up
around the knee. Cases where the swelling is extensive or painful should be
discussed with your doctor. Other side effects such as rash have been reported
rarely.
Precautions:
Before
using Synvisc tell your doctor if you are allergic to products from birds. Talk
to your doctor before performing any strenuous weight-bearing activities after
treatment. This has not been tested in children, pregnant women or women who
are nursing. You should tell your doctor if you think you are pregnant or if
you are nursing a child.
