What is Zometa (Zoledronic Acid)
Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is a member of the class of medicines called bisphosphonates, particularly nitrogenous bisphophonates; these are class of drugs used to prevent loss of bone mass & osteoporosis.
Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is not an anti-cancer therapy and is also used with other anti-cancer medicines.
Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is an infused therapy to treat patients who are at risk for complications from bone metastatic diseases, osteoporosis, and Paget's disease. Treatment with Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) will help protect your bones and reduces the risk of bone complications such as hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM: a condition resulting to high calcium blood levels due to cancer), bone fracture, multiple myeloma and other conditions that features bone fragility.

Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is given intravenously at your Doctor's office, clinic, or in an out patient clinic in a hospital. Common dosing interval for Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is every 3 - 4 weeks or as a single dose depending on indication. Infusion should not be less than 15 minutes. Due to the risk of clinically significant renal deterioration, which could lead to renal failure, single doses of Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) should not exceed 4mg.
Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) Safety Information
Do not use Zometa if you have a severe allergic reaction on Zoledronic Acid or to any of the ingredients found in Zometa (Zoledronic Acid). These reactions include rare cases of hives and angioedema (swelling, especially near the eyes or lips). Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates and contains the same active component found on Reclast (Zoledronic Acid). If you are treated with Reclast (Zoledronic Acid), you should not be treated with Zometa (Zoledronic Acid). Adverse effect of Zoledronic Acid includes renal toxicity, acute phase response (characterized by fever, rigors, fatigue, malaise, and bone pain), mucoskeletal pain, ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw).
Please tell your Doctor in advance if you are suffering from kidney problems. The risk of adverse reactions that are related to kidney may be greater. Take your vitamins and minerals while on Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) therapy and you should not forget to drink plenty of fluids while you are on Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) therapy. The following supplements should be taken once a day or as advised by your doctor with Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) therapy.
- Multiple Vitamins with at least 400 IU of Vitamin D
- At least 500 mg of oral calcium supplement daily.
Osteonecrosis of the Jaw is common to Cancer patients receiving monthly treatment of bisphosphonates including Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) with 1 - 10 % incidence. Most of the patients who experience ONJ are being treated with anti cancer drugs and corticosteroids.
DO NOT USE ZOMETA (ZOLEDRONIC ACID) IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR PALNNING TO BECOME PREGNANT OR IF YOU ARE NURSING MOTHER.
Eye related side effects such as fluid build up in the eyes, inflammation of the uvea, sclera, episclera, conjunctiva and iris have been reported with use of bisphosphonates, including Zometa (Zoledronic Acid).
